Cost & scope

PPC fees and ad spend: compare the full cost

Answer in brief

The total cost of PPC includes media spend, management and any required page or tracking work. Compare fee models against the actual scope and your ability to judge lead quality.

Separate the four parts

Media spend pays the advertising platform. Management pays for account work. Landing-page work changes the experience after the click. Measurement work connects the action to the reporting and, where available, later sales outcomes.

A provider may combine these in one quote or charge separately. Ask for enough detail to compare two proposals on the same basis.

Understand the management model

A fixed fee, percentage of spend or project price can each fit a different scope. None establishes quality by itself. Ask what work the fee includes and what triggers a price change.

For a percentage fee, ask how the agency recommends budget changes and who approves them. For a low fixed fee, ask how much page, creative and tracking support is actually included.

Use your own economics

Work from the services you sell, the contribution those jobs provide and the share of inquiries that become suitable paid work. Use your records where possible, and label missing numbers as unknown.

Do not use another business’s cost per lead as your profitability target without checking the lead definition, service mix and close rate. The same apparent lead cost can produce very different outcomes.

Agree how spending decisions will be reviewed

Define who can change budgets and what evidence will be reviewed. A campaign may need correction because of irrelevant traffic, a weak offer, missing tracking or poor response handling. More spend does not address every cause.

Keep the decision flexible enough to respond to evidence. A dated account of the change, spend and observed inquiries is more useful than treating a preset duration as proof that a campaign worked or failed.
